As explained in the official announcement, Calligra consists of several modules (Words, Sheets, Stage, Flow, Kexi, Braindump, Krita, Karbon, and Plan), and its makers have stressed that this development, the successor of KOffice, has several new features.

Among them is a complete rewrite of the text rendering engine, which can support almost all the advanced features of the ODF formats. The user interface has been simplified , and there are new modules (the aforementioned Flow is the most relevant, but Braindump, a tool OneNote style, is also protagonist).
