on CNET that Google and Adobe join forces in order to bring all systems ‘Unix-like’ a better representation of fonts on the screen. In other words, FreeType was falling behind quite some time.

JensonW 900 500x300Google and Adobe Partner to Improve fonts in Linux

The contribution comes on the heels of Adobe and its CFF (Compact Font Format), a new method for FreeType raster which among other benefits decreases the size of the font files, although the point key is the improvement achieved in the display fonts, especially in fidelity in their representation, sizes and placement, among others.

Of course, this is an Open Source development which are excited in Google. I implemented into the Linux-based operating systems (Android and Chrome OS) in the future, as for now the code is in beta , only suitable for testing.

Great news, no doubt. Just need to wait for the breakthrough development and distributions are made to the improvement that we, the users, to enjoy.

While we look forward to the beta launch of Left 4 Dead 2 next week and although at the time of this writing were not yet available, Phoronix reports Portal 1 and 2 come natively to GNU / Linux (a matter of time to be prepared).

portalLlega to encourage Linux Portal on Steam

So with a few years old late, at last you can enjoy these games logic first person , others would say puzzle. Yes, a great game, as Metascore score of 90 points for Gateway (2007, 6.99 euros) and 95 points for Portal 2 (2011, 14.99 euros).

If you know this title and prefer not to risk with the purchase, on Steam is available a demo of the first part. To whet your appetite, a video of the second part:

Portal comes at a good time, as the share Steam Linux , which soared in the first two months, has fallen in the last two. And there has been little, about four tenths. The ceiling reached 2.02%, to 1.5-1.6% April.

is hard to tell exactly because the Steam hardware survey now includes a hodgepodge important distributions, among which especially Ubuntu, Ubuntu and Ubuntu , and then as Linux Mint, Arch Linux, Debian, openSUSE … (if the proportion of desktop users is similar, and it appears some of it is …).

What will be the cause of the decline in giving Linux users Steam? Because interest in the novelty could bring more excitement than expected, but there is nothing more important and I do not remember what it is … Oh yeah, the games. Little by little, I would say that.

synthesize more in the headline: the Government of Extremadura plan to migrate some 40,000 computers to GNU / Linux , which is estimated will be a saving 30 million euros a year . Great news that reaches us late and rebound via Omnicromo.

lingobexGobierno of Extremadura: 40,000 PCs to Linux, saving 30 million a year

As we say, this is great news, and it’s the last we heard of Extremadura in this regard is that left LinEx and decanted for Debian., but now it seems the protagonist of the story is another, LinGobex , the successor project.

Migration, which began with a software audit in the first half of 2012 and has been running since early this year as a pilot program in several government departments Extremadura, is expected to finish finished this 2013, early 2014 .

You have more data in the press release published on Gobex, the official website of Government of Extremadura. Among other things it says and installation management system, information related to the health area, which is also included in this migration. But beyond that, no doubt that this is an ambitious project that we hope to qualify for success in a few short years.

Following the usual pace of development, Linus Torvalds announced yesterday the launch of a new version of the kernel, Linux 3.9 , whose main changes are, as always, difficult to summarize.

 Linux 3.9 kernel linux39Disponible

Considering

notes issued by The H Open, the site to which usually we go in the first instance by the brevity of his explanations, the most striking feature of Linux 3.9 is dm-cache , a system is introduced so that experimental to use SSD drives as cache other slower storage units, providing more speed in the file transfer.

As for improvements, there are all kinds, starting with the section on network with a new option, SO_REUSEPORT, which facilitates the use of multiple TCP and UDP sockets . For file systems, Btrfs continues to develop slowly but surely (note, this will be the future file system to replace Ext) and included in this release support, too experimental for RAID 5 and 6 .

graphic section found improvements Radeon HD controllers which include the 8500 and 8600 series, as well as support for the NVIDIA Nouveau and Intel. It also includes new drivers for various Wi-Fi chips, with special mention for the Intel 700 series, which would mean the beginning of the transmission mode support IEEE 802.11ac .

Finally (!) no change in point of virtualization , support new architectures , energy management and ultimately a lot technical level changes more complex to understand and to explain, is that it is business as usual: each is left with the detail that will enhance your user experience and the rest is as gibberish in which I will not go .

So, as I noted above, a good place for you to begin to understand all the news is particularly timely deliver us from The H Open and if you want to know more, there’s Kernel Kernel Newbies and of course . org, where and source code is available for download.

Zero to KDE with Linux From Scratch (Video)

first_main_article” class=”article readability=”72″>

If you read my articles from a while back, you have seen my great interest in distributions like Gentoo and Linux From Scratch. Soil also emphasize that, although they are more complicated to install systems end up being not as complicated as they seem. Of course for an amateur (like me), requires a couple of failed attempts to understand what needs to be done and then another couple of attempts that are catastrophic to follow an instruction or type bad bad a command. I invited you to try both, you now share my experience with Linux From Scratch … Literally .

KDE zero lfsDe with Linux From Scratch (Video)

For those not in issue, Linux From Scratch is a traditional installer distribution without . Not even provide installation media. Only a book that gives the steps to, first, set up a system that can run bash temporary and compile everything we need and, second, install the system itself. Previously, he had already managed to install, that is, complete the book. Until that point, we have only the starting sad headless expecting our username and password. The idea is to continue installing everyday applications to have a little more useful. That last point, for reasons of time, I always was pending. It is a second book called Beyond Linux From Scratch ( Beyond Linux From Scratch ) that follows the same idea as above.

Before going to the video itself I want to comment a bit on camera behind . etching process itself lasted twenty hours (nine hours to Linux From Scratch and fifteen hours for Beyond Linux From Scratch). Itself does not look much but would have to add a failed attempt above (also recorded) I had to redo the sixteen hours. All over the course of several days, each fragment does not last more than a couple of hours. Furthermore, it should be noted that much of the time have to be entering commands. My point with this is that it is a work of patience but also becomes eternal depending on the microprocessor you are using, in my case an Intel Core i3.

Both books use a measurement system based on SBUs time is the time it takes to configure, compile and install the Binutils package. Each package has calculated a value of SBUs, therefore, we can approximate how long it might take. For example, most are about 1 or slightly SBU. In my case, one SBU equivalent to two minutes and thirty-three seconds. Although a couple of SBUs not seem like much time, appear critical moments of the installation as compiling GCC together with evidence that leads SBU 53.5 . Besides this there are a couple of long duration like Qt but not the majority.

On the other hand, even if the process seems long, does it become repetitive as though one should not be completely aware of everything but typing commands and expect not to leave any mistakes. Besides, one can continue to work with the computer and let it compile the packages take longer. Suppose we have a low SBU: to be doing at times packages every day, not take much longer than a month.

No more words, here is the video . If you want to skip to a particular section in the description of the video are the timestamps for each section of the book. Of course not in real time but hundred times faster .

As you have seen, over the longer parts, I could not resist playing some old classics and to monitor what was going on with the build. If someone does not seem appropriate, I have in my defense xkcd strip that pretty much sums up what it means waiting for the compilation.

KDE zero compilingDe with Linux From Scratch (Video) The # 1 Programmer excuse to laze
justifiably “my code is compiling “.
– Hey, back to work!
– Compiling
-Oh, continue.

We still Songbird on Linux: Nightingale 1.12

first_main_article” class=”article readability=”48″>

is odd that I remember in The H Open that came out a few days ago the new version of Nightingale, when I’m testing the same version for the same. But it has, and I must say that not bad this player , I’ve been groping as an alternative to Amarok / Clementine in Ubuntu.

nightningale one 500x322Seguimos taking Songbird on Linux: 1.12 Nightingale

While Nightingale

not look too much into KDE this new version improves support for Unity and GNOME 3 , system notifications and sound menu system tray both desktops. Also, 1.12 Nightingale launches a plug-in that integrates SoundCloud.

Remember

Nightingale is a fork of Songbird, developers emerged when the latter decided to leave the Linux version to focus on versions for Windows and Mac OS X. It’s a pretty complete player, based on the same technologies of Firefox , sharing with the additions or features like the ability to browse without leaving the application.

If you fancy trying

Nightingale 1.12 , at its download page you will find packages that unzip and run the binary spare, plus a PPA repository for Ubuntu and derivatives Source code and installers for Windows and Mac OS X (also in AUR!).

I’ve tried this version, you could get many small and not so small flaws, but, for once, I’ll good : not sleazy visually supplements I installed work well and does not suck as much memory as expected. A pleasant surprise, with gaps.

XnRetro, a sort of Instagram for Linux and Android

first_main_article” class=”article readability=”53″>Admittedly

latter stage is being flagged WebUpd8. They do not publish much as before, but almost everything they use is interesting. This case is no exception and we discover XnRetro, an application becomes Instagram clone with its peculiarities.

xnretro one 500x369XnRetro, a sort of Instagram for Linux and Android

In essence, XnRetro is a simple application that apply visual effects to images -colored, light, basic retouching, etc.. Like Instagram, but regardless of the social factor. A change has versions for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS and Android (so that I could browse, is an application in Qt).

XnRetro features include:

  • 20 color effects
  • 15 light effects
  • 5 vignette effects
  • 28 frames
  • Basic Retouching

  • Share images via Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Imgur, Tumblr, ImageShack, YFrog, GlowFoto and TwitPic
XnRetro is a free app , not Open Source. A few years that bear sure I sounded the name, is that it is a creation of the developer of XnView, a powerful image manager, also multiplatform, who long ago was overshadowed by his pupil free, Gwenview, not functions, but in functionality.

XnRetro To test package is available only for 32-bit as reported in the original publication, it should not cause problems in 64-bit systems. Yes, you have to install it by hand, running xnretro.xh file included in the package. And if you also want to try the mobile version, here it is.

Celebrating a Sant Jordi ‘Linux user’

first_main_article” class=”article readability=”45″>

almost twenty years ago on April 23 is the International Day of the Book in many countries, but for many more years than that date marks the various regions of Spain. Especially in Catalonia, the custom on the feast of St. George (Sant Jordi in Catalan) is that men gifting a rose and a book women . It’s a tradition that I find nice, so I brought her here today.

Sant Jordi Sant JordiCelebrando one Linux user

What book would you give to a Linux user? As one of Linux and free software , clear, and although we have several shots along the journey of MuyLinux (I am not examples because the vast majority of links are dead), I’ll throw with a classic well known that no one should miss. I mean The Cathedral and the Bazaar .

The Cathedral and the Bazaar is an essay by Eric S. Raymond 1997 , so you must take into consideration all that has happened since. And it’s been a long, long. You can find the translated book in HTML or PDF.

And now we have yet to regale me a rose, so here goes: ROSA Marathon 2012 RP2, or what is the same, the second “Service Pack” LTS version (hey, five years of support, such as Ubuntu LTS) of this distribution of Russian origin who for a time has been duped with Mandriva, but that is over following his own path. If you like to make the jump, five days out of the oven.

Can you buy a PC with Linux preinstalled in Spain?

class=”article first_main_article” readability=”78″>

can . It’s all learn a little and get out another bit of conventional circuits aimed at the general public, read department stores or “shops”, although the latter sometimes have loopholes through which “sneak”.

ubuntupc Can you buy a PC with Linux preinstalled in Spain?

Taking as starting

an article on Engadget where they assess the options available to buy a computer with Linux, is de rigueur recognize that supply is rather low . However, there are interesting ways, of course, begin with international orders. For example, System76, the most popular specialized seller. Or, in the case of well-known manufacturers specific models, the Dell XPS 13.

I have rather stayed “home” for what to learn more about the field, and in this respect the original article speaks of Mountain, a brand that has long been demonstrating their good work. The downside I find is that they charge you 22 euros for preinstall Ubuntu in any of the models to get the sale, which seems a tad expensive.

ended up with alternatives that give us with PCUbuntu Engadget, a shop that did not know whose name sums up its contents. In it you will find both desktops and laptops , media centers and even monitors and other accessories, all with Ubuntu preinstalled. But not just any version: “our computers are LTS version, the last being 12.04. No intermediate versions installed “clarify on the cover. The truth is that PCUbuntu seems a more attractive option for the user common Mountain.

No more? Well, If you’re lucky can find some great surface where plan rarity in a PC or laptop with Linux. If it’s worth it or not is another matter, for what is certain is that you will not have to choose. Moreover, there PCBOX type shop or JPA, despite not sell anything with Linux preinstalled (to my knowledge), if you can mount a Linux clone and settle. My experience with specific PCBOX is that years ago I settled Red Hat if asked and not get charged for it. Now I do not know what will the topic.

But, yes, I have another experience to contribute, and it makes a year or a family member that he broke the computer and asked me to find him “cheapie something and put a Linux “, which is what was used on the job and deal with him playing, he said,” heavy and confusing Windows 7 “(hey, since I put Linux, had settled and needed no more, as many sometimes happens). Then I looked for stores that sold me preinstalled Linux machines, specifically in Spain, and I found VantPC.

VantPC is an PCUbuntu style, addressed to the common user, but unlike the former does not sell directly, but does so through a third party. I bought the team in Carrefour Online, I removed the Ubuntu 11.04 bringing factory and I put Xubuntu 12.04 and so far no problems (can not remember the components of the machine). VantPC now has more models around, so I recommend you take a look and see what you think.

course, could have done what I always do, which is to mount a clone myself as appropriate and me install the distribution to consider later, but it seemed more interesting to test and it worked (to the relief of my family!).

step Now I leave you and your comments, which will be of particular value to American readers, because if I have bigger Spain, Latin imagine. What experiences have regard?
