As we said, we reveal today the results of a survey that has had enough participation, is that the question deserved what is your favorite desktop? As simple as that. And the choice has been the most votes has been, surprise …

kde 500x282 What is your favorite desktop? (survey results)

Do you recognize? Well, because it was the first environment desktop GNU / Linux seems to return to hold the throne he lost a few years, if not in use-we know how difficult, if not impossible, that is to quantify that, at least in the opinion. We recall that in 2011 fell short of GNOME 2, the winner then.

But it rained a lot in two years, and as I said the other day, we had never taken so much variety in GNU / Linux, speaking of desktop interfaces. Now KDE is king , it is true, but, how much margin? What has been the overall picture? We have shown in the following image (click to enlarge):

500x500 Poll What is your favorite desktop? (survey results)

I’m not going to evaluate the results, that’s what you are you, but if I would say I have had several surprises along the evolution of voting. The first I have told you already, KDE has won the crown with one important difference, the second has surpassed Cinnamon Xfce , which is well below what is expected, considering the popularity enjoyed by Linux Mint in recent times. I was also surprised to see how MATE beats heading to LXDE , and there is much user out there who likes window managers and “Móntatelo yourself” which I think is great.

votes for “Other” are, as always, difficult to analyze, but with a quick review of the comments you can glimpse how much like Openbox ‘bareback’, while others prefer dwm, icewm … U options complete as Razor-Qt or Pantheon, Gnome with Cairo-Dock … Anyway, as a catch is not bad, really, but it has only been over GNOME Fallback and E17 (the latter , by the way …).

About the survey results, an error margin is safe. Also, in any case have to be taken as absolute truth, of course. However, I do think a sample to take into consideration on how is the courtyard on this issue, even “above”. Regarding the faults that we have had on the development of the survey, we note for the next.

Interesting article sent to us directly Benjamin Kerensa, Community Evangelist on Ubuntu, and yesterday held an exchange of emails with Mark Shuttleworth on the issue of inclusion of results Amazon in the Home Lens of the new Unity Dash 6.6.0.

amazon unity 500x283 Amazon Results in Unity, only a first step

A good example of an interesting use of the results of the Dash Amazon: search for books on Ubuntu

As you know, one of the novelties of the new version of Unity is the presentation of results in our generic searches Amazon in the Dash, which is not liked too many users my not-particularly-and convinced me that has provoked suspicions about the privacy and security of those transactions , that Ubuntu could turn into an interesting source of information to Amazon.

Mark Shuttleworth

tried to reassure users stating that privacy is totally not send data on those searches Amazon, as explained one of the developers of that property, and that is expected a secure protocol is integrated into such pursuits soon , but also, as he said, the idea is to offer the full search, which allows us to find not only documents on your computer, but services and products directly from Dash if they so wish.

Benjamin Kerensa

explains in his post that although he believes that the results for the shopping section are interesting, much work remains to be done, but it will be very powerful power make price comparisons of products online shopping directly from the Dash.

course that option is curious, but I still think it should have clarified Shuttleworth why Canonical takes Amazon to provide results, something that has never been clear. If Ubuntu takes a commission, as some readers comentábais in the previous post, perfect after all Canonical is a business and the goal is to make money . But it would be recommended that this decision would admit and explicasen more clearly.

For those who do not wish Amazon results on Dash, the quickest way is uninstall “Shopping Lens on Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping

Something that will save you from those results if you wish. It is normal for these early confusions occur with so striking a feature, and perhaps there was a little miscommunication by Canonical . Hopefully the best of them, for sure we will see a Dash increasingly powerful and versatile.

Here I bring the survey results the other day, in which you ask “do you give GNU / Linux all you need?”. In fact, the questions were several, all with the same goal: to make a scale of approximately how many you use only Linux , how it complementáis Windows or Mac, or vice versa . Let’s see.

linkey1 ¿ Gives GNU / Linux all you need? (Survey)

Before turning to the topic, a brief personal appreciation. Contrary to what some believe, as an entry with the previous survey, with over 170 comments (so far) shows that can discuss sensitive issues without creating any kind of ‘flame’ . Many of the responses, contrary to what might be considered “politically correct” in a blog as MuyLinux, have been well argued and have been respected. It should be.

Now, let the heart of the matter: gives you GNU / Linux all you need Yes and no.

ENC1 ¿ Gives GNU / Linux all you need? (Survey)

As can be seen in the picture, for many of you, Windows is still essential , for various reasons discussed below. However, a high number uses only GNU / Linux, a very significant (and positive). By contrast, the combination of Linux with other operating systems Windows alternative is rather residual.

ENC2 ¿ Gives GNU / Linux all you need? (Survey)

Interesting question, because although most claimed to utilize a combination of Linux and Windows, when staying with a system for day to day, rampaging Linux . And there is nothing like “distro of each” ;) It should be noted that there was another option, to give room for some other alternative operating system, but has not received a single vote.

enc3 ¿ Gives GNU / Linux all you need? (Survey)

If the answer to the first question was “just GNU / Linux”, ie, hard disk only needs to turn distro, it was important to note what percentage of those users yet resorted to virtualize some other OS, Windows in particular. You see, the most voted option is only Linux, so it’s out there a high number of users 100% Linux users … But Windows is felt in this section, as is felt the fans technological of Linux users, who really like to try new experiences.

enc4 ¿ Gives GNU / Linux all you need? (Survey)

Here is the real crux of the matter. Because, with the advantages by design and philosophy also have GNU / Linux vs. Windows , who used the second of playing the same level, or have available the tools you use at work ? Not to mention the supporting hardware and peripherals (missed by not including this option, it is clear). And there’s not much to argue about it that has not been said a thousand times already.

In short, it was very interesting to see how is the patio. GNU / Linux needs to improve in three ways if you want to aspire to great market: games, business applications and hardware support . At the same time, proves to be a perfectly valid for many types of user, whenever circumstances accompanying a little.

facebook Facebook logo21 300x300 test searches sponsored results Lately Facebook puts too much emphasis on the inclusion of advertising on the site. At this time the social network is testing a new system that includes sponsorship between search results . For now the feature is available for a limited number of users.

Basically, this new feature aims to firms with paid Facebook pages to appear at the top search results . The idea is nothing innovative, as it is in the testing phase, it is unknown if he can get the bulk of users.

The team at The Next Web contacted Facebook talk about this new feature. This response was emitted from the social network:

Currently we are testing a feature that displays results sponsoreados alongside organic results when people perform searches on Facebook. We try to show pages and applications that may find interesting.

social network obviously does not want to give too many details on this new system. The idea is not too striking because, as regards to trademarks, most users already know which page to turn.

People who use Facebook usually do not discover new products and services from the site search box , but by user recommendations or through other websites. Be seen whether this feature evolves and comes to all users. We look forward to further developments.

promised, that they say, and here I bring you the results of the survey in which we invite you to join the other day, where you basically ask what valorabais over GNU / Linux, if your condition free software or is free .

results 500x357 What you value most GNU / Linux is ... (Results of the survey)

chart detailing lines on these results, and not many more to add. Well, yes it is: blue is freedom, free green . ¿Surprise

I can not go without refer you to the results of an earlier survey we did here in MuyLinux, is that you value freedom above of free, yes, but pay for free software, is another story (and I repeat no more because everything is explained and requetedebatido in the previous link).

Well, that’s the way and so we have told you ;)

After nearly 14 days of survey in search of the “best” distro GNU / Linux 2011 (note the quotes), and your vows you have spoken and here are the results to give proof. As well imagine that you are willing to see them, leave some comments below, and without further ado, I leave you with what we have:

re 500x468 And the best distro of 2011 is ... (Poll Results)

previous

if you catch is a bit confusing to analyze, then list the ordered survey results, showing votes and percentage on the cake:

Ubuntu

    1. : 828 (27.09%)
    2. Linux Mint: 422 (13.8%)
    3. Debian: 351 (11.48%)
    4. Arch Linux

    5. : 297 (9.72%)
    6. Fedora

    7. : 268 (8.77%)
    8. openSUSE: 223 (7.29%)
    9. Kubuntu: 114 (3.73%)
    10. Chakra: 102 (3.34%)
    11. Xubuntu: 76 (2.49%)
    12. Mandriva

    13. : 68 (2.22%)
    14. Other: 55 (1.8%)
    15. Lubuntu: 52 (1.7%)
    16. Mageia: 44 (1.44%)
    17. Gentoo

    18. 31 (1.01%)
    19. Trisquel

    20. 31 (1.01%)
    21. Slackware: 22 (0.72%)
    22. Pardus

    23. : 20 (0.65%)
    24. Elementary

    25. OS: 19 (0.62%)
    26. Sabayon: 18 (0.59%)
    27. PCLinuxOS: 16 (0.52%)

specialized media , despite the redundancy, but little else. As an example, who would not go before that Distrowatch to Google for information of the distro that interest you? In my opinion, very few people (except for those who we have to announce new versions with the public).

respect to margins of error and “strange things”, as you can imagine I’ve been watching the process and have not detected anything unusual (sudden rush of votes, etc). The other day I explained some things about the survey and I said the same thing: to cheat the system have to spend plenty of time to each vote, plus you have to know how to get (someone with a pretty good eye almost got it right in the comments the other day, too much effort to vary minimally a survey that is not going anywhere). Total consider possible “fraud” at least .

I also noticed that several communities echoed the news, but as you can not be everywhere, that’s fine because, as I say, the arrival of votes was successful (at first many, little by little, as the news was lost in time, far fewer).

Now, my personal assessment of the results:

  • Ubuntu : Unity Like it or not, Ubuntu is still the queen and have done with the remaining pineapple family, their support would have been even greater. Will next year and, when Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is left without support? We will see then. (As a side note, the article of the survey was not included in category Ubuntu, so that was published in the Planet)
  • Linux Mint

  • : The most popular modification Ubuntu has certainly increased the number of adherents, although it is almost half the votes than the base. Yet is the second in the list, and that’s saying something.
  • Debian : What a surprise I have taken the debianites. It’s really very nice to see a venerable as Debian, clinging to the “stable software”, so alive in these times.
  • Arch Linux : If there is anything that makes it clear in 2011 that GNU / Linux is concerned, is that Arch Linux is deservedly one of the great (and not just I mean by this survey, too.)
  • Fedora : As a detail, I dare say that most of the votes received by Fedora come from across the pond, but no matter. Clearly, the community of Red Hat distro still in the gap.
  • openSUSE : Oh, my dear Gecko, I would have liked to see higher in the ranking, but I’m content to see that still have good health (you know where was my vote;)
  • Kubuntu as a separate option , also Chakra . For Xubuntu , expect to find above, and the Mandriva … Judge for yourselves. Adding their votes to Mageia , which blunts his own for the early-development would not have reached Kubuntu.

“Other.” Do other distros minority, regional, professional …? Difficult choice to analyze. It is possible that if we repeat the survey next year, have slight changes, but taking into account wide range of possibilities and the fewest votes received , we have not lost too much (and it happens that the 55 votes have the same option on the head, and the comments could not be scratching a lot).

minority of the most surprised me Gentoo and tie Trisquel (in a good way), at the same time I am disappointed with the results of PCLinuxOS ( the last of the ranking!) and to a lesser extent, Slackware and WIN Pardus .

To conclude, there are the data of the percentages. Yes, Ubuntu has regained Linux Mint and it continues to lag behind, but in general, with respect to the “big distros”, I think the cake is more evenly distributed than ever (I imagine two years ago to take these results).

And now your turn to say to you .

Facebook or Google + ¿? The ‘muylinuxeros’ anoint win to … (survey results)

    first_main_article” class=”article readability=”60″>

Last week we published a survey ended last night in which you asked for your favorite social network , although the focus were gathering around Facebook and Google + . As promised, here are the results.

plus vs google facebook1 Facebook or Google + ¿? The muylinuxeros anoint win a. .. (Survey Results)

The reasons for focusing the survey in a “Facebook vs. Google +” inherent in the scope of both social networking with you, our readers, as well as the possibilities of such services , very different from happy microblogging that for some things very well, but for others it is very lacking. I have already explained the other day, but for the first reason were left out and Tuenti Diaspora, for the second Twitter and Identi.ca (among others).

addition to Facebook and Google +, there were two options in the survey: “ any step of social networks ” (lighter impossible, right?), and “ other (s ) “. Obviously, anyone who does not like the two main options and prefer sites like Diaspora, Myspace, Twitter or Identi.ca, even to claim, should have chosen that option.

has and apart from some recrimination in the comments of the previous article (recriminations that bad though, are watching mindless who you voted preferences), here are the results of the survey :

RE ¿ Facebook or Google +? The muylinuxeros anoint win a. .. (Survey Results)

    As can be seen

landslide victory for Google + , which takes almost 60% of your votes. Followed far behind Facebook, accompanied closely by those who do not want to hear about
social networks (very interesting this data). The last option, by far, is the other social networks.

There are different ways to analyze the results:

  • The survey focused on Facebook and Google +. so that, even using other services and even preferring an undetermined number of users has opted for the two options offered to also be users of these.
  • Most of those who voted actually prefer Facebook Google + and Diaspora, Myspace, etc, by far.
  • Any other theory

  • crazy or not you can think of.
  • valid for way the shots .

Well, how do you see PHP 5.x ?

What is your favorite web browser? (Survey results)

    first_main_article” class=”article readability=”60″>

day earlier than promised, and to wait until tomorrow is not going to change anything after a week, here are the results of the survey with the record turnout that we beat. As I said at the time, is easier than most successful you have the top of the standings, but despite what might seem at first, so there undisputed king that does not deserve anything the following picture:

Firefox King What is your favorite web browser? (survey results)

Yes, Firefox has swept so brutal , so brutal in fact that refutes all those statistics that Google Chrome attributed to an unmitigated rise … but Chrome, Chromium not is the second most voted browser , with large difference.

    I roll up

more and here are the results of the survey, a direct capture of the current state of voting (not closed until tonight, but will not make a big thing ; click on images to enlarge):

500x342 results What is your favorite web browser? (survey results)

    So things are

: Firefox eats half the cake, no qualms and takes more votes than the other browsers together like it better than Chrome Chromium, almost double, a fact very interesting, Opera is not bad either, no sir.

As for minority browsers, as I said in the news this morning rekonq minimalist KDE browser is the most voted their environment , followed by Konqueror (and making!) and Midori in dead heat, with Lynx Epiphany touched by the tail absolute classification, as expected.

Regarding the choice of others, as always, is more difficult to analyze . Do you surf not included, mistakes, contrary opinions (mine, of course, as included in the same bag all the seed of Firefox)? Who knows. Either way, there are few votes as to who had been a noticeable change.

And not much else to add. So things have been and so we have told you. Now your opinion;)
