is odd that I remember in The H Open that came out a few days ago the new version of Nightingale, when I’m testing the same version for the same. But it has, and I must say that not bad this player , I’ve been groping as an alternative to Amarok / Clementine in Ubuntu.

nightningale one 500x322Seguimos taking Songbird on Linux: 1.12 Nightingale

While Nightingale

not look too much into KDE this new version improves support for Unity and GNOME 3 , system notifications and sound menu system tray both desktops. Also, 1.12 Nightingale launches a plug-in that integrates SoundCloud.

Remember

Nightingale is a fork of Songbird, developers emerged when the latter decided to leave the Linux version to focus on versions for Windows and Mac OS X. It’s a pretty complete player, based on the same technologies of Firefox , sharing with the additions or features like the ability to browse without leaving the application.

If you fancy trying

Nightingale 1.12 , at its download page you will find packages that unzip and run the binary spare, plus a PPA repository for Ubuntu and derivatives Source code and installers for Windows and Mac OS X (also in AUR!).

I’ve tried this version, you could get many small and not so small flaws, but, for once, I’ll good : not sleazy visually supplements I installed work well and does not suck as much memory as expected. A pleasant surprise, with gaps.

You know that the statistics on the use of GNU / Linux have to catch them all with tweezers, and no better example of this than the figures offered DistroWatch, a site that directs major based distros to search on their page. Without wishing to detract from its value to DistroWatch, their statistics serve as timely curiosity, nothing more. And here comes into play DistroRank.

As we discovered in

Ostatic, recently has been born a new site that aims to specialize in measuring the use of GNU / Linux, DistroRank, each week presents the results of its findings both GNU / Linux to BSD . What how? As they explain (including method), the factors that enter into the calculation are:

  • Number of news published on the distro
  • Percentage

  • indicating server are running the distro
  • Percentage

  • desktop users who are using the distro report

you are (home, work, or both), you use the distribution and additionally if they like, a comment. With all that data, each bit is updated list , which is actually not one but two, which includes only the votes of visitors and makes the mean with all data (the latter is considered more reliable).

for months been talking about this alternative to traditional X11 windowing system, and although its advantages are remarkable both for users and for developers, there are still many points to be resolved. And that has just announced the availability of Wayland 1.0 (and its window manager, Weston).

1 0 Wayland Wayland 1.0 available, but there is still some way to go

is because as indicated on Phoronix, the creator of Wayland Wayland explained that Kristian Høgsberg 1.0 “ simply defines the point at which developers can Wayland sure no backward compatibility with the Wayland-based protocol and its API “.

So we have a version particularly relevant Developer , but not as crucial for end users: it will take even see Wayland in action in any standard distribution, and in fact the list points to be solved is important, as revealed in the original article.

    Phoronix

believe that although there may be attempts to integrate Wayland in Ubuntu 13.04, and that support this integration will not be realized until Ubuntu 13.10 , which only appear within a year. Other distributions like Fedora will also demonstrate the experimental possibilities of this system of windows, but again we are left with this message: way to go.

WordPress is still the most popular Open Source CMS

    first_main_article” class=”article readability=”48″>

500x359 cms WordPress study remains the most popular Open Source CMS

WordPress -which, incidentally, used in MuyLinux since we started our journey- is clear reference in the popularity rankings followed distantly by Joomla, which had led this study for two years but since last year went to second position, and has now lost even more with respect to development created by Matt Mullenweg.

    Among

based CMS. NET stands DotNetJuje while in both Java-based CMS like Alfresco Liferay are leading in popularity.

the surprises of the study is Concrete5 CMS , which according to the investigators showed that growth came no alternative, but still can not cope with the first 3 CMS Popularity ranking.

At the other end, as indicated in The H Open, were CMS that seem to be losing too much interest , such as e107, the legendary Movable Type , and TextPattern and Xoops, which could leave the top 20 most popular CMS in the next edition.

The list is constructed from survey data and other metrics such as number of downloads, number of installations , if there is support from third-party companies, or if there are several books on these CMS. You can download the complete study (in English) in PDF format at this link .

Identi.ca is still falling two days after upgrading to 1.0.0 StatusNet [Updated]

    first_main_article” class=”article readability=”65″>

Saturday morning there are already two days fall Identi.ca , an error that comes curiously result of updating the site to Status.Net 1.0.0 , the software on which it sits.

Identi.ca Identi.ca logo still falling two days after upgrading to 1.0.0 StatusNet [Updated]

    Try

Identi.ca now enter only leads a error message topped by a link to the blog of Status.Net, name of the developer and its product, which explains the circumstances .

Apparently, full upgrade to the new version of Status.Net, with a key version number such as 1.0.0, all fell apart because of some errors in a script and what was supposed to last a few hours repair leads all the same weekend.

The penultimate update of the restoration process information on the company blog, linked above, I kept very good taste: “If you really need of Status.Net, maybe you should download the code and assemble your own site ?”

Somewhat scary, considering that the entire infrastructure cloud-Status.Net including corporate sites, is down , not only Identi.ca, the most striking.

the next and last post there are already hopes that the situation will be resolved during the night (in the U.S., throughout the morning in Spain), so we just have to wait a little more to, among others, Identi.ca back to life, perhaps the social network Tux how many exist today, also the best alternative to Twitter (what would have happened if Twitter take two days fall?) .

Update: I made a mistake in the writing of this article that should be clarified: Identi.ca delay in getting back online not only due to the error mentioned , it only lengthens waiting more embarrassing for which claims to be-indeed, it is, the more serious alternative to Twitter. A weekend offline to update the platform? That business is called fudge.

You know I love many Identi.ca, much more than Twitter, not only for its Open Source nature, also have a more organized structure and especially the air we breathe geek, especially Linux user.

But one thing does not remove the other … Can you imagine the headlines that would give even the mainstream press, if they fell two days away from online services like Twitter, Facebook, Gmail …

Apologies if anyone has been confused with the first information. Hope has been clarified.
